{"id":4272,"date":"2016-09-28T19:59:42","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T19:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.trafficsafetystore.com\/blog\/?p=4272"},"modified":"2016-09-28T19:59:42","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T19:59:42","slug":"autonomous-vehicle-vocabulary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.trafficsafetystore.com\/blog\/autonomous-vehicle-vocabulary\/","title":{"rendered":"Developing the Vocabulary of Autonomous Vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the efforts of tech giants like Tesla and Google, the world is on the cusp of a revolution on the road. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As self-driving cars inch closer to reality, they\u2019re popping up on neighborhood streets, making headlines, and generating a lot of legislation. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until the federal government and industry luminaries can come together to create a unified vocabulary for self-driving cars and establish a universal set of rules and regulations, these technological marvels may just find themselves stalling before they can leave the dealer\u2019s lot.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>New DOT Regulations <\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, Jacob Brown lost his life while driving his 2015 Model S Tesla in the autopilot mode. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the car manufacturer, Brown\u2019s fatal accident was the first one ever for Tesla\u2019s autopilot feature, which has been driven more than 130 million miles. In fact, there are even reports that Tesla\u2019s Autopilot feature has been instrumental in saving at least one life. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In August, a Springfield, Missouri man managed to drive 20 miles with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/08\/06\/tesla-autopilot-hospital-rescue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help of Tesla\u2019s Autopilot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feature after suffering a pulmonary embolism in rush hour traffic. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stories like these are becoming increasingly common in the United States as Tesla\u2019s autonomous vehicles make a slow entry into the driving world. Their prevalence in today\u2019s news cycle only serve to highlight the need for universal communication between authorities and manufacturers.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/AV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Transportation\u2019s announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about its new regulations for autonomous vehicles, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/autos\/autonomous-technology-words-matter-article-1.2800612\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim Resnick with the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Daily News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI would question the \u2018Autopilot\u2019 label for Tesla&#8217;s Level 2 autonomous features. The driver of any car is still responsible for maintaining control of the vehicle regardless of technology on board. \u2018Autopilot\u2019 implies otherwise. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No other car company that offers Level 2 autonomous features \u2013 and there are many \u2013 imply as strongly that their cars can drive themselves.\u201d <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers supported the new Federal Automated Vehicle Policy released by the Department of Transportation, there\u2019s still a great deal of debate on how to handle self-driving vehicles. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The federal government, industry experts, and businesses are still attempting to get on the same page about automated cars. It\u2019s rare to find a united front even among the different faces of the industry. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Resnick reported that the, \u201cNHTSA [National Highway Traffic Safety Administration] just scrapped its own definitions of the various levels of autonomous, self-driving capabilities and adopted the widely-accepted Society of Automotive Engineers&#8217; definitions of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficsafetystore.com\/blog\/automotive-autonomy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levels 0 through 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p><h2><b>A Real Need For an Autonomous Vehicle Vocabulary <\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we all hop into cars that can pilot themselves on the road, consumers, regulators, and manufacturers need to adopt a vocabulary for autonomous vehicles, and it\u2019s not a matter of \u201cif,\u201d but \u201cwhen.\u201d <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autonomous vehicles are coming, so the best we can do as a society is to \u00a0insure that everyone is on the same page. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Resnick asked;<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhether or not he [Jacob Brown] had a full understanding of the \u2018Autopilot\u2019 system&#8217;s limitations is a considerable question. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Tesla&#8217;s \u2018Autopilot\u2019 were labelled something less promising like \u2018Speedminder,\u2019 or \u2018PaceTronic\u2019 would Jacob Brown be alive today?\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though that sentiment may strike some as alarmist, it aptly points out our collective lack of knowledge regarding self-driving vehicles.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standard driving terminology is a part of the overall vernacular used each and every day. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drivers know the difference between \u201cbraking\u201d and \u201caccelerating,\u201d but that same knowledge base isn\u2019t necessarily a given for those driving with an autonomous system onboard. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is currently no standard language used for the features and functionality of autonomous vehicles, which can only lead to problems both on the road and \u2014 potentially \u2014 in the statehouse.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s safe to say that the general public isn\u2019t familiar with the five levels of autonomous vehicles, for example. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that car buyers have a limited grasp of the technology they drive off the lot. If those people who buy regular cars are any indication, most autonomous vehicle owners likely don\u2019t take the time to thoroughly read the vehicle owner\u2019s manual to learn every nuance and detail. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the Department of Motor Vehicles isn\u2019t testing drivers on their understanding of autonomous vehicles, meaning a driver\u2019s license does not necessarily indicate a thorough understanding of the technology. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, there is not currently a method for gauging a driver\u2019s comprehension of autonomous vehicles, even if they have purchased one of these cars already. That\u2019s just one potential shortfall of an industry that\u2019s not focused on instilling in its customers a working knowledge of the vehicles they drive.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the burden lies with manufacturers. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These companies have to make it as clear as possible to consumers what every piece of autonomous technology does so these vehicles are properly operated. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While an \u201cAutopilot\u201d functionality might have a cool ring to it, a driver might not be fully aware of the extent of this feature and could end up hurting himself and others, as we saw in the Jacob Brown\u2019s tragic case. Truly, there must be a universal and accurate vocabulary adopted for autonomous technology. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terminology used in a Tesla autonomous system needs to be the same as the terminology used in a Ford autonomous car so drivers are fully aware of what they are doing behind the wheel. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, consumers have to shoulder some of the responsibility. Operating an autonomous vehicle without the knowledge of what each and every feature means for the driver can only lead to more accidents, injuries, and fatalities. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s critical to understand that autonomous technology does not mean it\u2019s permissible to watch a YouTube video, respond to text messages, or engage in any other distracting activity while you\u2019re in the driver\u2019s seat. Quite simply, autonomous vehicles do not replace responsible drivers. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As governing entities and auto conglomerates align their understanding of autonomous vehicles, a new standardized vocabulary for this technology must be adopted across the board. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, there are numerous aspects to autonomous vehicles that need to be further developed and regulated.
