60% of 15-20 year-old drivers and passengers that died in collisions were NOT wearing a\u00a0seat-belt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nTeen driving fatalities has become a health epidemic in The United States, causing up to 3,500 deaths a year.\u00a0 All of these statistics have opened the eyes of Washington officials, and\u00a0they’ve\u00a0seen the need for education and traffic safety awareness in the country.\n\nThat\u2019s where National Youth Traffic Safety Awareness Month comes in.\u00a0 This month long celebration\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0just reach the ears of American youth.\u00a0 The National Organization for Youth Safety<\/a> has partnered with the government, corporate leaders, and young people also launch\u00a0Global<\/em> Youth Traffic Safety Awareness Month.\n\nThe goal of Youth Traffic Safety Awareness Month is to raise awareness about the importance of good driving\u2014especially as we enter the summer months.\u00a0 According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Memorial Day is the start of the deadliest time of year for teens on the road.\n\nOver 1,000 young drivers die in traffic accidents during the summer months compared to 800 deaths in the non-summer months.\u00a0 So, May is the perfect month to begin a traffic safety campaign.\n\nTo promote Youth Traffic Safety Awareness month, the National Transportation Safety Board is rolling out an informational campaign.\u00a0 The Ad Council started an outreach program in Teen Vogue <\/i>magazine.\n\nAT&T has even developed an \u201cIt Can Wait\u201d<\/a> program encouraging young drivers to wait to read text messages until\u00a0they’ve\u00a0arrived at their destination.\n\nThe US Department of Transportation, Mazda Motorsports, the Ad Council, and The National Organization for Youth Safety had their second annual \u201cProject Yellow Light Scholarship\u201d contest, where entrants developed and produced short videos showing the dangers of \u201crisky mobile behavior on our Nation\u2019s highways.\u201d\n\nThe project\u2019s theme this year was \u201cOne Text or Call Could Wreck It All.\u201d <\/a>What\u2019s the hope for this year\u2019s theme?\u00a0 That peer-to-peer anti texting messages have a greater reception than \u00a0adult-to-teenager communication.\u00a0 Teenagers tend to listen to one another, rather than taking advice from parents or teachers.\n\nThe Century Council and 17 Attorneys General across the US released PSA’s for their \u201cIKnowEverything\u201d<\/a> program.\u00a0 This program encourages a dialog between teens and parents when it comes to safe driving.\u00a0 In this particular PSA, Attorneys General encourage parents to talk to their kids about the dangers they face on the road, and encourage them to pay attention 100% of the time.\n\nIt\u2019s great to see so many education\/awareness programs scattered throughout the globe encouraging teen driving safety.\n\nYes, teens may think they know everything\u2014but they need to be aware that they are rookies on the road. \u00a0Hopefully, National Youth Traffic Safety Awareness month is the first step to a safer driving environment for old and young drivers in the coming summer months.\n\n \n\n \n\nImage Source: The National Organization for Youth Safety,\u00a0http:\/\/www.noys.org\/gytsm_history.aspx","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
