Fortunately, there are\u00a0a few simple things you can do to reduce the chances that you are involved in one of those\u00a0tragic incidents.\n

Tips For Driving Safe This Winter<\/h2>\nSafe winter driving starts with your mindset and the general level of preparedness you take into account at the beginning of the season.\n

PREPARATION<\/h3>\nBearing in mind the statistic above about the most dangerous day of the winter season\u00a0being the first day of snowfall, it\u2019s worth getting yourself prepared early to avoid being\u00a0caught out by a surprise weather event.\n\n1. General Maintenance<\/strong> – more serious weather conditions puts more pressure on lots\u00a0of different parts of your vehicle. If there are any niggles that you\u2019ve been meaning to sort\u00a0out – from your windshield wipers to your exhaust system – get them fixed before the cold\u00a0weather hits. And it almost goes without saying that you should check your coolant level.\n\n2. Tires<\/strong> – there are two main things to consider with your tires – their pressure and whether\u00a0you should buy winter tires, such as the Bridgestone Blizzak<\/a>. First, pressure: tire pressure\u00a0drops with colder temperatures, so there\u2019s no point going on the figures you got back in\u00a0the hotter months of the year. As soon as the temperature starts to dive, get them checked\u00a0again\n\nSecond<\/em>, the question of winter tires. With special rubber compounds and carefully designed\u00a0treads that will improve your vehicle\u2019s traction, handling and braking, winter tires<\/a> are worth\u00a0the investment if you live anywhere that regularly drops below freezing – even if it doesn\u2019t\u00a0snow that much. If you do decide to invest, get four rather than two – otherwise you risk\u00a0greater spin because of the difference in traction.\n\n3. Survival kit<\/strong> – depending on where you live, you might want to put together a bit of a\u00a0winter survival kit to keep in the trunk of your car in case of a breakdown or unexpected\u00a0stop. A shovel, salt\/sand, blanket, ice-scraper, torch, tow rope, candle and matches, jumper\u00a0cables and a few snacks will keep you safe and warm until help arrives, or may be all you\u00a0need to get back on the road.\n

Planning Your Trip<\/strong> – remember to leave a bit of extra time for your trip (you\u2019ll probably\u00a0drive more slowly than you would in the summer), and avoid a last minute rush by giving\u00a0yourself a good 15 minutes to clear your car of any snow or ice. A thorough clean is best –\u00a0you don\u2019t want any roof snow sliding down onto your windshield, or to limit your vision by\u00a0looking through an icy peephole!\n\n2.
